Competitions
WHAT IS THE COMPETITIVE PROGRAM? At AEDA there are two class options. Parents can enroll their children in either our recreational stream or our competitive stream. Competitive groups will attend between 3-5 local COMPETITIONS between February and May with a possible finals in late spring or summer. At AEDA the Competitive Program is a lifestyle choice as this will affect the majority of not only your child's free time, but a great deal of parent time as well. AEDA we have a strong competitive team that we are extremely proud of. Year after year we do extremely well.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF JOINING THE COMPETITIVE PROGRAM? A life changing and memorable experience that will teach your child about hard work and dedication. They will learn to cope with stage fright, to focus, to work with others and to understand their own strengths and weaknesses. We also hope our dancers will be inspired not by winning or losing but through competition itself. This can be more valuable to a dancer than winning 1st place. We also want our dancers to have the knowledge and ability to enter the professional dance world if they so choose. Dancers will receive feedback from professionals in the industry as well as achieve success from the challenge of setting and attaining personal goals.
HOW OLD DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO BE TO ENTER THE PROGRAM? Dancers can start competing at 5 years old.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE COMPETITIVE PROGRAM? Beyond just regular class RATES; Group competition entry fees range between $25-$45 per dancer per competition. Solos, duos, trios may be more. Extra studio rehearsals may be needed at the instructors discretion and parents will be responsible for the extra rehearsal fee. Our competitive dancers travel as a group to specialty workshops and conventions, the price for these can range from $20-$250 (or more depending on location) for a weekend. We require a $75 , non-refundable costume deposit at the time of registration. It is difficult to determine what the price will be before the costume has been chosen to suit the choreographers vision. The cost of costumes depends on factors such as where it's coming from, cost of materials, tax and difficulty. We cap competitive costumes at $200. The balance will be due before receiving the costume.
WHAT OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES DO I HAVE AS A PARENT OF A CHILD IN THE COMPETITIVE PROGRAM? Parents must arrange transportation to and from the competitions. Hair and make are also the responsibility of the parent. The teacher will inform you of what this needs to look like as we approach the competition days.
HOW DO I JOIN THE COMPETITIVE CLASSES? Competitive dancers are either recommended by their teachers or you can audition at our open audition in May (join our email list to stay up to date). You may also call to set up a private audition. All chosen competitive dances MUST attend the summer choreography week in August. We choose dancers and group dancers by age, ability, talent, potential ability as well as their eagerness to learn and be challenged.
